Ganked from [ profile] settiai:

Five ways you know a story is by Lady Norbert:

1. It's almost certainly shippy. Only about 10% of my stories aren't.

2. At least one reader has been converted to supporting the ship in question. Shad/Ashei became well-liked by those who read If It's Dinsday, This Must Be Castle Town. Skinner/Elizabeth became ridiculously popular, which is interesting considering she's an OC.

3. If it's a period piece (which many of them are), you know I've spent an unhealthy amount of time researching things to make sure they're just the way they ought to be. And I probably take the time in a final chapter to make sure you're aware of my Google-fu, and provide citations where applicable.

4. I'm very particular about sensory imagery. I have a strong idea of color, texture, smell, taste, sound, etc. and I try to make sure the reader gets the same impression. I think description is probably my strongest suit in writing.

5. There's a very good chance that a character, probably the main character, has some kind of daddy issue. Flora in Knights and Knaves feels like her adoptive father Professor Layton doesn't really want her. Sabrina, the protagonist of my never-finished Lord Voldemort backstory Riddled With Hatred, had a combative relationship with her unloving male parent. And do we even need to mention Elizabeth Quatermain?

So I signed up for that anon writing meme last night, as did a number of you. I received two comments which basically contradict each other, because one said that my relationships are very believable and perfectly paced while the other said that the women I write are offensive. I assume this means Elizabeth since she's the only woman I've ever really written, not to mention the comment's reference to an English rose. The only other character I've ever written who fits that description is Charlotte, and the number of people with whom I've shared more of Charlotte than her cameo in the last Elizabeth story is very limited.

I thought about responding, but it was anonymous and I doubt the commenter would ever see it anyway. But hey, why not respond here? Read more... )

Wow. The response to my poll was quite interesting. Apparently, many of my friends have a fondness for dairy products.

After reading all your comments, though, I think I'd better clear something up. :) The poll was never intended to seriously help me make a decision. I was bored and silly and threw it on there because I hadn't made a poll in ages and thought, eh, why not. Nearly all of you who had anything to say urged me to do what I want to do, and that's precisely my intention.

Trust me, if I'd been in serious need of input, "I like cheese" would not have appeared as an option. It's just my default silly answer for polls.

Also, I do want to say thanks for all the positive feedback I've received regarding the original five stories. :) I'm very touched.

[ profile] maddarilke makes my night by posting, among other things, thusly:

I have been re-reading TPDoEQ from the beginning. It is so dense that I've not even arrived to Bessie's first kidnapping, LOL. ;) I'm remembering some things about it that I'd forgotten, and discovering things I'm sure I hadn't noticed the first few (hundred) times. You know, I know you are a fabulous writer, and that your efforts unrelated to TPDoEQ are just as amazing, but it really is as phenomenal as your fangirls have been telling you, over the years. oxoxoxox

Thank you. :)

It never ceases to amaze me when people contact me from out of the blue to tell me that they've just discovered TPDoEQ and how much they like it. [ profile] emerald_happy, wherever you are, you just brightened my day considerably. To wit:

Dear Lady Norbert,

I hope you don't mind me sending you a message here as is currently not letting me log on.

I read all of your LXG fanfiction today and loved it. Thank you so much for writing it. I wish I found it earlier although I am very lucky to be able to read it all straight through. I can tell it's going to be some of my favourite fanfics ever.

I thought Elizabeth was a great original character and the subtle way her relationship developed with Skinner made me laugh and cry and want to poke them to get together. Oh it WAS SO FUN TO READ!

The outtake when Jekyll proposed to Mina was sooo cute. I loved how Skinner didn't actually want to say it. So in character and the contrast between the two proposal scenes made me think you really developed the characters from the movie but making it seem natural rather than lots of changes.

The Alan's point of view of the events was hilarious. So many funny lines. And I've just just finished downloading some of the soundtrack songs and i'm looking at the artwork, which is beautiful.

I look forward to reading more of your LXG fanfics. Especially to see if Alex and Tom get together. *throws carrots to the plot bunnies*

Thank you so much!

Emerald ;-)

No. Thank you.

To update the situation mentioned in this post, the TPDoEQ Soundtrack Project is nearly finished.

First, thanks to ALL of you who contributed songs! You are wonderful and amazing.

Today, while I was hunting for something completely unrelated, I stumbled across and it was the answer to my troubles. Lemme 'splain how this works. You join MP3Fiesta with your credit card; minimum purchase is $19.90 (which is what I bought), and this loads money into your account. So long as there is money in your account, you have the option of downloading literally thousands of songs. Individual tracks are between ten and twenty cents apiece, so even the minimum purchase nets you close to two hundred downloads.

For less than two dollars, I was able to all but finish the Soundtrack Project as it currently stands. I still need a couple songs for volume V, and by that I mean I need to pick the songs. I also was unable to locate only one track for the other four volumes -- "A Pharaoh's Dream (of Endless Time)" by Level 42. But except for that song and the two or three songs I still want to select for volume V, I now have every single song I personally associate with TPDoEQ, which means anyone who gets the actual story can also have a soundtrack CD.

Edit: I've made up a playlist here on the office computer of the Soundtrack Project, and I am absolutely tickled. The Nazareth song "Ship of Dreams," which is what I selected for Nemo's theme, actually has a vaguely Indian feel to the music. It's way too appropriate. I scare myself. XD

As I reported some while back, I received the Best Christmas Card Ever this year from [ profile] siriuslypeeved. Kevin scanned it in for me last night, so I may finally show you all what makes it so incredibly awesome. Here's a hint -- he's a man in black. )

Doubtful that this will be of much interest to anyone but myself, but this is my long-term plan of what I need to accomplish with regards to wrapping up all the details concerning the series. Really, it's just so I don't forget anything. Read more... )

What may be of more interest to certain among you is that I am sitting here listening to The Valley of Fear, and I have a particular other late-Victorian lady rustling at the corners of my imagination. There may be a resurrection of activity in that regard. :)

I just downloaded all of the chapters of EQ proper. No side ficlets or alternate versions, just Elizabeth's actual diary.

Final word count: 132,866.

Here ends the private diary of Elizabeth Quatermain. Thank you, dear readers, for everything!

But first, some art!

Ella has graciously returned to her pictorial display of Elizabeth's life, and the latest installment is her usual awesome. Set in volume V, here is...

An update

The head cold, or sinus infection, or whatever the hell this is has been lifting slowly. Last night I turned in almost right after Who Wants to Be a Superhero? (though I signed on long enough to post chapter 14) and actually took a full dose of NyQuil. I rarely take a full dose, because if I don't get enough sleep it makes me excessively jittery. But last night I slept almost ten full hours. It took care of the worst of the symptoms -- the sore throat is gone, as is most of the congestion -- and now I'm in that weird time between being completely sick and being well. I'm achy and drained, and I keep blowing my nose, but I'm still ten times better than yesterday. Eating very little, but sucking down fluids like there's no tomorrow. I should be back to full capacity at some point this weekend.

My sunny godchild called this morning to say that the first week of October (the back half of British Invasion III) happens to be the week of her fall break. Translation: Discordia will be very crowded. It begs the question, How many gorks can you fit into one house?

Got my first birthday present today, a Chris and Sarah ficlet from [ profile] clez. Made me laugh very hard. Thanks, Clezzy!

I'm hoping to do chapter 15 of EQ tonight, if only that; this is going to be a rather big deal, so it will probably comprise only one diary entry. Elizabeth and company are about to meet a famous person. Probably the most famous and important person they could possibly meet in 1900. Chew on that, true believers.

Anyway, back to dosing myself with juice and soup and pain relievers.

In other news, I have a steadily worsening cold and am seriously considering calling in sick tomorrow, except I really hate doing that.

I stumbled upon someone's MySpace profile a few days ago in which I was mentioned. This kind of floored me. In everyone's profile there is a space for listing "My Heroes," and hers reads, in part, that Lady Norbert is her fanfic-writing hero. So I sent her a message saying that I'm Lady Norbert and I'm very flattered at the mention.

I just got her response.

Yes ma'am, you are one of my heroes. In only my wildest dreams could I hope to become as good of a writer as you. I mean, your TPDOEQ stories ROCK! They are, in fact, what got me into fanfiction. And, believe it or not, got my grades up. See, before fanfiction, I didn't read much. Therefore, my grades weren't the best. But then I found your story, got into reading because of it, and I am now making all A' s and B's. So, yeah, I think you deserve a place as one of my heroes! lol.

PS: It was really cool you wrote me, thanks!
ladynorbert: (tpdoeq)
[ profile] siriuslypeeved actually sent this to me last week, but I'd kind of forgotten to upload it to my Photobucket until today. Have a gander at the newest piece of TPDoEQ fan art!

The scene is from volume III, when Elizabeth is going through her father's room on the Nautilus and trying to decide what to do with his personal effects. Skinner comes to help her, and discovers that Allan had installed a false bottom in his steamer trunk, creating a compartment in which to hide money and important papers. Read more... )
ladynorbert: (tpdoeq)
For those of you who are still clinging to your fandom of my series (which, yes, I will be updating soon), [ profile] siriuslypeeved sent me another glorious bit of art last night. I LOVE IT. This is the scene in volume III, "The Wintering," in which the League celebrates Christmas; it is the particular bit where, since Elizabeth is dancing with Jekyll and Mina with Nemo, Tom and Skinner waltz together to be silly and Tom makes his well-loved remark that We need more girls on this ship. )
ladynorbert: (seethrough)
[ profile] siriuslypeeved, you ROCK!

Look what she did this time! I think there's steam on the inside of my monitor from this!

Eeeee! )

With at least ten more coming.
