"Definitely has the air of a lady, but kinda hard, like life's pushed her around a lot."
This here be a ficlet for
quote_ficlets, one of the coolest and most-ignored communities on LJ. (Yeah, I'm as guilty of ignoring it as anyone.) Saw the current quote and this walked into my head and decided to be written. Enjoy!
Title: Untitled
Fandom: Firefly (specific to the RPG "Firefly: The Ixion Chronicles")
Genre: General
Character: Briony Martin
Rating: G
Briony set up the wave recorder and looked at it thoughtfully. "Hi, Daddy," she greeted the man who would receive the message. "Well, I'm off in space again; got a new job."
She wasn't about to tell her father the circumstances which had led to this new 'job.' After the disappearance of her twin brother Brian, Briony never mentioned the word Reavers where her father could hear it -- or anyplace else, if she could avoid it.
"She's a Firefly class ship," she reported. "The Ixion, they call her. And am I mixed up with a strange collection of people here!" She shook her head, smiling. "Well, you know what they say. All you need to start an asylum is an empty room and the right kind of people. I think some of this lot would qualify."
She glanced over her shoulder before continuing. "Let's see. Well, our cap'n's name is Henry. He goes by Taur, though, which is short for Minotaur. Like that old legend from Earth-that-was. Drinks a lot, though never while he's working, so don't worry. He really don't seem like such a bad guy, but pretty rough around the edges. Not terribly friendly-like. He calls himself a 'reluctant' captain, whatever that means.
"Ship ain't his. Belongs to the chief engineer, Alexis. He's sweet -- calls me 'little Bree' -- an' he's got real pretty brown eyes. Don't get any ideas, though; Lex is sly. I think the other mechanic might be sly too, Sirius. Don't know much about him, but if I'm right...well, guess I'll just be seein' what there is goin' on. Anyway, I'm sure you don't care 'bout that." She paused. "First mate's a lady called Kate. She's kinda like the cap'n, a little rough round the edges. Definitely has the air of a lady, but kinda hard, like life's pushed her around a lot. She does her share of pushin' back, though, that's certain. I think I like her, but she's not makin' it real easy to tell."
Briony picked up the little recorder and carried it around the room as she talked. "This here's my bunk. Pretty spartan, but it looks like I'll be here awhile, so I might start makin' it a bit more homelike. Ixion's not had a proper crew in a long time -- not the whole time Lex has owned her, anyway -- and he seems keen to keep us on. It's okay by me, really; I like this crew better'n the last one." She set the machine down again. "Let's see. Medic's a woman, too -- Karen. Sharp lady, that one! Real smart. Knows her stuff, too, right handy to have around. An' there's a Companion on the ship as well, named Liana. Real cultured and gorgeous...well, aren't they all?"
The message was interrupted by a shout from somewhere overhead. "Briony!"
"Uh-oh. Gonna stop this here, Daddy, but I'll come back and finish it before I send it. Didn't tell you about everyone yet, I don't think." She paused the recording, then climbed the ladder out of her room. "Colt? What're you yellin' about?"
"Uh...nothin', really...just thought maybe you'd like to come sit on the bridge a spell." The slight desperation in his voice told her everything -- Alexis was attempting to flirt with the pilot again, and he wanted her to act as a buffer.
"Gimme a few minutes. I'm sendin' a wave to my dad." Ignoring any further sounds of distress, she climbed back down and resumed her message. "That was Colt," she told the recorder. "Colton Hex. He's the pilot on the ship -- yeah, I'm co-pilot. He's a couple years older'n me, and Lex seems to think....well, I'm not sure what Lex thinks, really. He spends a lot of time drivin' Colt crazy, though, an' Colt looks to me to kinda keep him at bay. It's ridiculous. Anyway, that's what's goin' on right now, up on the bridge, and I prob'ly oughta get up there anyhow. Dinnertime's soon, so I'll send this off." She gave the recorder a warm, affectionate smile. "Send me a wave back soon, an' say hi to everybody back home. Love you, Daddy."
Switching off the recorder with a light sigh, she proceeded to send the message before climbing out of her bunk once more. "You two havin' all the fun without me?" she drawled, stepping up onto the bridge and looking from one to the other.
