and Laura gets another interesting job

We're still trying to raise money down at the church to pay for the renovations to our century-old roof and steeple. Lots of interesting events have been planned, and one of them was placed in my so-called capable hands this evening.

It's to be a prom, or a ball, or however you care to describe a formal dance. For grownups. And I get to plan it all. It'll be next March, in the church gymnasium, and I get to set the date and choose the theme and hire the DJ and plan any refreshments and do the advertising and bla bla bla.

One hitch.

I've never been to a prom in my entire life.

In other words, I don't even know what happens at a prom, other than dancing and getting your picture taken and selecting a king and queen. I'm a bright, creative kind of girl, so I'm sure I can pull this off...somehow...but I could use a little help.

Here's a poll. Please, please, as you love me, take this and give me some ideas.

[Poll #520295]

Thank you.

You want something that'd get the largest number of people involved, from all age groups. I was originally thinking movie as in the singular, but movies, plural, would probably be a good idea. Given that this is a church function, you probably have quite a few older folks who remember the movies of their youth. I'm sure everybody remembers films like Casablanca, The Maltese Falcon, Yankee Doodle Dandy and Gone with the Wind.

...well, now. I guess a Gone with the Wind themed party might be fun. However, I suggested a mixed old-style Hollywood party because I'm sure you'd also like to keep it simple for everyone, too.

Yes, keeping it simple is key (especially for ME ;) since I am so lost). Old-style Hollywood is definitely a pretty cool idea, and one that I certainly would never have had. I think the people who plopped this project in my lap are leaning toward a song-themed prom, but I'm hedging my bets by presenting a number of ideas to the council (who have to approve whatever I decide) and I'll include yours in the mix. Thanks!

Well, old swing and jazz favorites should be an easy go, too.

Or you could do an era-themed prom. (I nearly said wedding there, for a moment. O.o) Y'know, like the 1920s, or the Victorians, or the hippies, that sorta stuff. From what I hear, it's pretty common in parties. Not sure about proms, though, down here they're gala style (read: $200 gowns upwards).
