Squishy finally got taken to Best Buy last night for diagnostic and stuff. The Geek Squad just called and basically they're recommending a cleaning and a reinstallation of the hard drive, because the file which is causing the problem has been corrupted beyond rescue. This will cost $150.
To back up anything on the hard drive will be an additional $99.
I am trying to remember whether there's anything on the hard drive that would be worth shelling out the extra hundred bucks. (My novel is NOT on there. Thank goodness. Otherwise there wouldn't even be a question of whether it was worth it.) Mostly I think it was games...RP files...photomanip art projects...screencaps...maybe a couple of short stories but nothing urgent. I think the majority of my RPs that I would want to keep are either already posted in
carnivalofmuses or else one of you has them. Some of the files will be lost for good, I know, but I'll live.
And it would be worth it to have my computer again. Kevin's computer is nice, when it wants to behave, but for some reason the graphics program -- even though they're the exact same thing -- seems to work better on mine. Of course he'd have to reinstall it for me, but no big.
The geeks are also recommending I let them install their spyware and firewall thingummy, which will run another $130; they seem to think that I got zapped by a virus, which caused the meltdown.
So for a bit under $300, I could start off the new year with my beloved laptop in good working order. I would feel motivated to put the guest room back in proper order (it having become very topsy-turvy during the dismantling of Pop's house) and reclaim it as my sanctum sanctorum once again. I'll feel the pinch, sure, but...is it worth it? Squishy's not a terribly fancy computer. He's great for watching movies, playing games and CDs, and of course spending hours online. He's a good writing tool. He's not all that useful for a lot of higher-end stuff. In a day and age when technology becomes outdated every five minutes, or so it seems, this little 2002 computer is practically decrepit.
But he's mine. He is my Squishy. And I'm going to get him back.
