My Rosy-posy ([livejournal.com profile] sophy) responded to the blog challenge, which doesn't altogether surprise me. Her request does, somewhat.

Tell me about your hair.

My hair is hard to describe, in part because I really have absolutely no idea what color it's supposed to be. Sometimes I'd say brown, sometimes I'd say black. When the question arises in a meme, I usually say it's "an indeterminate shade of dark." At one time, on account of exposure to sunlight and pool chlorine, it was black, brown, red, and slightly blonde, giving me a sort of calico look that was really kind of cool; my aversion to heat tends to keep me out of the sun these days, though, so that's a thing of the past. I've dyed it maybe three times in my life, the last time being back before I was married, and I've had two perms.

I have approximately four gray hairs, which are difficult to find if you aren't looking for them; it looks like I've inherited the graying tendencies of my grandfather's family, the women of which get that pretty silvery gray, almost sparkly. If that's true, it also means I can expect not to go fully gray for a very long time; Aunt Edie is 80 years old and still has a head full of mostly black hair. (There's some gray in there, so I know it's not a dye job.) ignore this part

It's very thick hair. (I remember in middle school, our science teacher took a strand of my hair and a strand of another girl's hair to compare under a microscope. Hers was thin and blonde and coated with a buildup of styling product; mine was thick and black and completely devoid of the stuff.) I usually have the devil's own time with ponytail holders; they usually don't hold firmly enough and the ponytail's base works its way slowly down to my neck. A regular elastic is fine for tying off the end of a braid, but an actual ponytail requires a scrunchy just to be sure I've got a tight enough hold.

I had natural springy curls when I was a baby, and then for years I had stick-straight hair. When I reached high school, it mysteriously began getting curlier and curlier, possibly as a result of being cropped to my shoulders after several years of growing. If I washed it at night and went to sleep with it wet, it usually resembled a sort of loose perm in the morning, which was kind of cool. It does that sometimes even now; usually it just has a sort of vague wavy quality.

At its longest, it reached to my waist and was all one length. For my birthday last fall I had six inches cut off and finally allowed them to give me some bangs (fringe to you Brits). It's grown since then and falls to about the middle of my back again. I really need a trim but keep putting it off in favor of more amusing pursuits.

On a whim, I went to images.google.com and looked up the phrase 'pretty men,' just to see what I'd get.

Not exactly what I had in mind.
