Keeping my word and working on those ficlets; yay for slow work mornings.

Title: Cult Shadows
Game: Ever Winter Tales
Characters: Lorelai Parker (Lady Sif) and Tristan Grady
Prompt: "There's nothing quite as annoying as people who think that they're better than I am"
Author's Notes: For [livejournal.com profile] shining_phoenix, who owns Tristan. I know virtually nothing about this character, so I hope I do this decently for her. The cool thing about writing this is that suddenly, this muse works again, and I might actually be able to participate in the game.

"I have a job for you, Mr. Grady."

Tristan eyed the High Priestess with mingled respect and suspicion. "Is that so, Lady Sif? Forgive me, I'm a little confused."

"Understandable." Thor's acolyte uncrossed her long legs and leaned forward slightly, a catlike smile curving just the corners of her mouth. "Let me guess. You want to know how it is that the High Priestess of Thor has come to know who you are, and what you can do. Your devotion to Thor's following is not absolute, but it is sufficient to keep most other mutants from questioning your motives. You run from a most painful past -- oh yes, I know about that too," she added, and now her expression was one of perfect sympathy. "An absolutely horrific tragedy. I really am very sorry for your losses."

He made some appreciative noise, and she continued. "It's actually that which makes me feel that you're the best one for this task -- that and your particular abilities."

"And what do you mean by that?"

"Well, I'm sure you must have gathered by now that I have my own little network of spies. All of the High Priests do; we all do our best to spy on each other a little, but mostly our concern tends to run to the so-called normals." She saw him stiffen. "Recently my spies have uncovered news about their pathetic token resistance. There's going to be a gathering of rebels tomorrow night, in one of the south side warehouses."

"I see." He paused. "What do you want with me, Lady?"

"You have the ability to render yourself effectively invisible. What I need is for you to infiltrate that meeting. Sit there in the shadows, listen to what they say. Return to me with a full report on their plans. You will, of course, be suitably rewarded for your work."

"I don't want anything."

"Mr. Grady...your loss haunts you night and day, and small wonder." Her voice was developing a more persuasive pitch; Sif was, after all, a siren, and she was not above using her powers to get what she wanted. "What I can give you is the one thing you have most lacked since that terrible day -- a purpose. A reason to continue."

He looked at her, and she hid a smile at the slight hunger betrayed in his countenance. "Oh, yes. I want you to join my spy network; more than that, I want you to become one of my most trusted allies. Naturally, you lack the full understanding of the great Thor's master plan; but you don't lack the understanding of how necessary it is to quash the rebellion. It's absolutely crucial to Thor's will, and to my own. Besides," she added, adopting a playful tone for a moment, "there's nothing quite as annoying as people who think they're better than I am. Especially when those people are such obviously inferior whelps as these resistance fighters."

He still looked a little hesitant, so she resumed the persuasive intonation. "The world has changed," she said softly. "There are so few I can rely on completely. But I have been watching you, Tristan Grady, and I think you just might be one of those few. You will lack for nothing, if you will only do as I say."

She waited, with infinite patience, for his answer.
