It's hard to pick just three, because I have read a lot of books that I truly adore in a lot of different genres.
Three of the best I've read:
1. Pride and Prejudice -- It's just marvelous. In the words of J. K. Rowling, I find Jane Austen to be "utterly un-put-downable."
2. The Chronicles of Prydain -- Granted, it's a series of five, but I have them all in one volume so I maintain it counts. These were my first introduction to fantasy literature (I first encountered them in high school) and I love them to this day. Every time I read them I get something new out of them.
3. The Hound of the Baskervilles -- I love Sherlock Holmes, that's no secret. This is my favorite of them all. It's just a perfect mystery.
Three of the worst I've read:
1. Lord of the Flies -- Sure, it's well-written, but it turned my stomach so much that I literally could not finish it.
2. Brave New World -- I just really, really disliked it. Again, it was well-written, but it did absolutely nothing for me.
3. The Legend of Rah and the Muggles -- For those of you who missed this crime against the written word, the author of this travesty claimed that Madam Rowling's Harry Potter books were a plagiarism of her work. There was a copy in the dollar store one day, so I picked it up out of curiosity. I paid too much. Nancy Stouffer should have paid ME. This story is incoherent, poorly plotted, and just plain bad. I almost want to post the content in a journal entry just to share its awfulness with everyone, but that would require me to read it again and the very idea hurts.

Date: 2009-11-29 11:30 am (UTC)I read Lord of the Flies in sixth grade, and really enjoyed it, though it sort of creeped me out a bit, when looking at my classmates. But I totally get how it would turn stomachs. Really, just because a book is well done, doesn't mean you have to enjoy it. And life is far too short to go on reading books you're not enjoying. There are plenty of books to move on to. ^_^
